They hear the most silent of footsteps.Goodreads
They are faster than anything you've ever seen.
And They won't stop chasing you...until you are dead.
Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.
After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.
Rebellious, courageous, and tender, this unforgettable duo will have you on the edge of your seat as you tear through the pulse-pounding narrow escapes and horrifying twists of fate in this thrilling debut from author Demitria Lunetta
From the start I knew I would get into the groove of this book. It felt lonely, scary as hell, creepy, and desperate. The book made me feel these feelings as the story flowed. I dug that. A lot. I loved not knowing what the these flesh-eating creatures were, where they came from, or how to stop them. The world it seemed was in the same boat too. Luckily for our main character Amy (I called her “Silent Amy”) she was a QUICK LEARNER. Her home was created by a Scientist for a Mom and a Hippy for a Dad. Mom hooked up the house with an electric security fence, Dad hooked up solar panels, roof top gardens, etc. Convenient but not entirely unrealistic.
The tenderness and fierce protectiveness she showed for “Baby” (toddler she found while searching for food) was impressive and sweet. Many would have left a young toddler to die in an post-apocalyptic world. “Silent Amy” was a great “MC”. She was a great combo of humanity that allowed her and “Baby” to survive in the wild as long as they did.
The 1st half of the book impressed me greatly. I rejoiced when they got rescued, but knew deep down “New Hope” would turn out as a creep fest in some way. Amy’s inquisitive nature, a few questions and comments said to the wrong people, and Amy ended up in the clutches of a truly sadistic psychiatrist. He is someone I hope to learn more about in book 2! A great villain! He deserved more attention and character building.
The book had just enough juicy tidbits about the creatures “Them” and their origins to keep you going. The action and drama were well spaced and played out. I thanked the skies above there was NO INSTA-LOVE. I am sorry but this world was no place for that sappy romantic love. The characters were beautifully flawed and I loved seeing them exposed like raw nerves.
The book ended rather abruptly. It was one of those “HUH?” endings. Normally those tick me off to no end. In this case it has me hyped for book 2. I’m excited to of read a solid post apocalyptic book with dreadfully hideous monsters and humans alike. Been a long time a’comin.
